  • Yet another desperate shedding question.

I'm on week 11 now using the Hairmax. It pretty much stopped my shedding, which started up last June and have left me very thin. Already at 6 weeks use or so, I noticed lots of tiny hairs sprouting. But as of last week, week 10 my hair started to fall out again and now, this week (11) my hair is coming out in handfuls again!

Big clump of hair in the shower drain, when I blow dry and every time I comb or pull my fingers through it. I'd say I lose about 300 hairs a day since the beginning of week 11, and it doesn't seem to be halting any time soon.

I know it's said that we all can have different onset of the initial, positive shedding. Since I'm frantic, I just need to ask if this really is normal. For how long will this go on? 2 weeks? 3? Longer? At this rate, I will be pretty much bald by week 20!!!

The hairs lost are mainly the thicker, long strands. But I also find some of those short, whispy hairs that I try to see as something positive, if this means they're turning into thicker ones.

I'm not sure what my hairloss in general is due to. Throughout the years I seem to have periods of heavy shedding, my hair goes really thin, then seems to have grown in again, at least in the past. It's never thick though.

I'm actually going to try a gluten free period as of last Tuesday, my mom has gluten intolerance and I know it can be very common and also genetic. And I've heard it can cause diffuse hair loss, not just Alopecia Areata.

Please, I hope you can give me some reassurance. Thank you!

    Hairmax and shedding

    Hi Thinsky -

    Thank you for your post.

To answer your question, it is normal for people to shed about 100 hairs a day. However, during part of the normal hair cycle, you shed more hair (particularly in the summer and fall). Therefore, since you are seeing shedding of thicker hairs and fine wispy hairs, it appears you are 1) shedding some of the telogen hairs that will be replaced by thicker terminal hairs, and 2) you are normally shedding some of the regown hairs during the hair cycle. Most of all, it appears as if what you are seeing on your scalp is the beginning of the HairMax working.

As we have pointed out, shedding is not predictable, but from what you are saying, you are definitely responding positively to treatment with the HairMax. We continue to advise people to take the 'long' view and wait for 5-6 months to judge results. As you can read on this Forum, the shedding time and period is variable, with some people taking over a year to see results. Again, the HairMax DOES NOT cause permanent hair damage - should you stop treatment, your hair would return to where it would have been had you not been using the device.

In conclusion, our best advice is to stop counting hairs lost each day, continue to use the HairMax as directed, add other products such as the HairMax Healthy Hair products to compliment treatment with the HairMax, and take the 'long' view of your results.

We wish you further success in your treatment with the HairMax LaserComb.

Shedding 50-100 hairs a day is normal.. the upper range in summer/fall maybe.. NOT MORE! The inaccuracy of information on this forum around this is not good. If you are shedding, daily, MORE than 100 hairs, there should be a concern. If you are seeing it after long term usage of LLLT therapy, it would seriously concern me.

My experience with Hairmax now into the 7th month has proven to be a failure. I had more hair before I started using the Ultima 12 laser comb. I have archived months of pictures and videos. It is pathetic what I have gone through, and hope others will be particularly cautious. I don't believe that my substantial thicker hairs that I lost on the crown and bilaterally will come back. My dermatologist will back me up as she has logged my photos, and I will see her again at the end of the week. Buyer beware! This product is FDA cleared for safety BUT NOT APPROVED as a hair growth device.

          Hairmax laser devices

The HairMax has been proven in 7 clinical studies with 460 male and female subjects to be effective and safe. The original 2006 clinical study was an integral part of the submission process that led the FDA to clear the HairMax laser device for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia and promote hair growth in 2007. Without this study, the FDA would not have cleared the device for marketing.

As to efficacy, the HairMax laser devices like ALL treatments for hair loss to not work on ALL people and that is why when purchased from Lexington directly there is a 20 week money back guarantee (less a restocking charge), so that people can try the devices to see if they work for them. We cannot predict how the devices will work on everyone, so over 1.5 million men and women have decided to try the devices for their hair loss, instead of having to resort to drugs.

As to shedding, that cannot be predicted either. However, the effect of the laser on the follicle is local, and once the energy stops stimulating the follicle when a user discontinues usage, the hair returns to the state it was in had not the HairMax been used for treatment, but it does take time for the hair to grow back.

We do not believe that this user is typical and that her hair will grow back, as there have never been any reports of permanent hair LOSS resulting from use of the devices.

Not Atypical, hair loss with HairMax, do not blame victim

I bought the HairMax LaserBand 41 Jan, 2019; I have used it according to directions, moved it at each beep; my hairline has receded noticeably, about 2" around temples, and 1" at forehead center. I am a woman, without adult male baldness. I am a doctor of social epidemiology. I have now decided to stop using the laserband and see if any growth returns to pre-HairMax days, however thin.

HairMax one clinical trial of <500 people is insufficient; also, please provide the exact details of all clinical trials, how people were selected, whether double blind randomized method, length of time, which products used, etc. Thank you.

              Hairmax hair shedding

              Dear NYTXCATX -

Thank you for your use of the HairMax and sharing your post on the Forum.

It is important to realize that hair shedding IS NOT hair loss. The HairMax provides local stimulation directly to the follicle, and this causes the diseased hairs to shed. This shedding does NOT CAUSE ANY DAMAGE, and once the use of the device is discontinued, the hair WILL return to where it would have been had the HairMax not been used. It is entirely possible that the pattern hair loss condition does get worse over time and that the HairMax will not be able to exert its full effect. That might require adding minoxidil to the regimen or may also necessitate seeing a dermatologist for a diagnosis.

As to your characterization of the only evidence of efficacy is "one clinical trial of <500 people is insufficient" is incorrect. There have been 6 double-blind multiple studies with over 400 subjects conducted to date with the devices. Below is a ink to the Synopsis and Clinical Summary (35 pages) which provides complete information on the HairMax and describes the results of clinical studies conducted to date.

              https://www.hairmaxpro.com/clinical-synopsis/

The seminal article published in a peer review journal, describes the results of 4 double blind, multi-center clinical studies with 225 male and female subjects has become THE reference for laser/HairMax treatment of hair loss. It was authored by some of the leading authorities in hair loss, and has now had over 127 citations to date. This results again proved the consistent predicable efficacy of the devices

Of course, there is no way to predict the outcome of the use of the HairMax laser devices, as each individual reactions differently. However, as stated above there is NO danger of 'hair loss' occurring from use, and if use is discontinued, hair will return to its original state. We also invite you to visit the Professional Web site, www.hairmaxpro.com for further information.

              Very truly yours,
              LAS

What do you mean by diseased hair? Is that similar to the damaged ones? How to know if there are diseased hair?

                  Hair loss

                  Hi Tripleswoop -

Androgenetic alopecia or pattern hair loss describes a hair disease.

Thinning hair is a sign that the hair follicle may not be performing as it should and so the diseased or thin hair is shed. If your hair is thin and wispy, then it is a good time to begin treatment.

The HairMax laser devices stimulate the diseased hair follicles to enter the normal growth phase and regrow healthy thicker hair.
